How to Choose a Brand Strategy Consultancy
August 31, 2026
Pitch decks all sound the same. A practical checklist for evaluating a brand strategy consultancy: what to ask, what the incentives reveal, and the red flags that predict an expensive engagement.
Most brand strategy pitch decks are interchangeable. The vocabulary is similar, the process diagrams rhyme, and every firm promises transformation. The difference between a good engagement and an expensive one is rarely the deck; it is what the firm actually sells, how it defines success, and whether its incentives point at your business or its own.
Here is a working checklist for choosing well.
Start with your problem
Before evaluating firms, name the business problem precisely. Is demand inconsistent? Does price collapse without discounting? Do customers engage but leave? Is the offer indistinguishable from three competitors? A consultancy that speaks back to you in commercial outcomes, rather than jumping to creative vocabulary, is one that will treat your problem as a business problem. That is the first filter.
Questions worth asking
Ask how the firm measures success, and distrust any answer that cannot be expressed in demand, margin, retention or resilience. Ask who actually does the work, since the people in the pitch and the people on the engagement are not always the same. Ask what they would decline to take on, because a firm with no point of view about fit will happily take a problem it cannot solve. And ask directly about incentives: does the firm earn anything from the media, the production or the partnerships its strategy might recommend? Independence is not a virtue statement; it is a structural guarantee.
Red flags
A few patterns predict disappointment reliably. Strategy that ships as a PDF and a workshop, then departs. Firms that sell execution under a strategy label, arriving at recommendations that coincidentally require their production arm. No demonstrated standing in your category, because generic brand thinking travels worse than firms admit. And a discovery process that never speaks to customers, which means the strategy was written about you, not about the people deciding whether to buy you.
What good looks like
A serious consultancy starts by listening, commits to a position, and stays measured against the numbers the board watches. It makes the strategy live inside the organization rather than in a document, and it is honest about the order of operations: strategy first, execution after. Choose the firm that can tell you what your brand should mean and what that meaning is worth, and you will rarely regret the fee.
If this describes your business, the next step is a conversation about where the brand can carry more weight.
